The Eiffel Tower was evacuated on Monday afternoon after a man was seen climbing the emblematic Parisian monument, the company that manages the site told AFP.
Members of the police and firefighters were deployed to the site, a police source said.
“We detect a person climbing, this is the usual procedure, we must stop it from continuing and in this case the Tower is evacuated,” added a company source, who could not say how many tourists were evacuated.
“The Eiffel Tower is currently closed until further notice,” it could be read in French and English on the official Twitter account of the monument, in which tourists are recommended to postpone the visit.
The police are in contact with the individual, but for the time being, the reasons for which the facade of the monument was scaled are unknown, said the same source.
It is not the first time that a person tries to climb this emblematic monument of 324 meters high. In October of 2017 it was completely evacuated due to the presence of a young man who threatened to commit suicide.
, which attracts tourists from all over the world for its monuments, culture and gastronomy, received 89.4 million foreign tourists last year, thus maintaining its position as the world’s leading destination.
And the Eiffel Tower, which this year celebrates 130 years since its construction, is the most visited monument with paid access in the world, with seven million tickets per year.
