WHO names Lady Gaga’s mother as “ambassador for mental health”


The Director General of the World Health Organization, Tedros  Adhanom Ghebreyesus, today announced the appointment of Cynthia Germanotta, the mother of the singer Lady Gaga, as a goodwill ambassador for mental health, at the opening of the assembly annual of the organism.

Germanotta, who runs the Born This Way Foundation together with her daughter Lady Gaga since 2012 and attended the opening session of the assembly, will support WHO in international campaigns for the prevention and care of mental illnesses.


“It will be an honor to work with Dr. Tedros and his extraordinary team to make sure that mental health for all is a global priority, we face many challenges, but there are many reasons for hope,” said the mother of the pop star. Germanotta has become a recognized activist at the helm of the foundation – baptized as one of her daughter’s most famous songs – and this allowed her to present at the United Nations General Assembly in 2018 the initiative “United for Global Mental Health”


The head of the WHO also announced the appointment of goalkeeper of the Brazilian team and Liverpool, Alisson Becker, with his wife Dr. Natalia Loewe Becker as ambassadors for health promotion.


Finally, former Liberian President Ellen Johnson, awarded in 2011 with the Nobel Peace Prize, will be the new ambassador for health personnel.
